Workshop Overview

This workshop will introduce you to the art of creative problem solving in Houdini. Problem solving is such a key aspect of being an FX Artist, but it can be easy to get tunnel vision when it comes to approaching tasks - using conventional tools and workflows for one task may not always be the best solution for the next. This workshop aims to show you that there are plenty of options available to you when it comes to problem-solving, if you can learn to think outside the box like an FX Technical Director.

We start by breaking down the physics of a contained fluid to better understand what's driving the motion and how we can replicate that in Houdini. We also discuss the technique (originally created by Andrew Lyons), when you would want to use it and the pro's and con's of this way of working. We then dive straight into Houdini where we build up the setup from scratch, node-by-node. We fix issues along the way, iterate on the motion and come up with clever ways to get around technical limitations using a myriad of tools such as CHOPs, VOPs and procedural modelling techniques. Finally we bring our FX into Solaris where we setup look-dev, lighting and the final composition of the shot to render with Karma.

The workshop comes included with several assets so you can dive straight in and focus on the FX, just like a real production shot.

Who is this for?

This workshop is for FX Artists that want to elevate their problem-solving skills with a fresh way of thinking. By the end of this workshop you will gain a whole new perspective when approaching tasks in Houdini. If you're just starting out, this workshop is a perfect introduction to how FX Technical Directors approach tasks in production. And if you've been around a while, you'll be reminded of the power of simplicity - and that simulations are not always necessary. Or maybe you've never even heard of CHOPs, wherever you're at in your journey - this workshop will introduce you to a bunch of handy tips and tricks to take with you to any task.
